In the early 1970’s my first wife (Frankie) and myself founded a street theatre group
in Norwich. We concentrated on children’s entertainment and pub theatre, and gradually
expanded into fairs and festivals. We were mainly funded by Norwich City Council,
South Norfolk council -and later the national Arts Council when we were recognised
a being one of the earliest professional Community Arts groups in the UK.
Frankie used her considerable artistic talents to build our sets and also the puppets
that we worked with. Sometimes the show would be mainly puppetry (ie Punch and Judy)
and sometimes an inter-reaction between life size puppets and the actors (ie the
Tale of the Abbot of Aylesbury).
We didn’t initially bother to give the company a name -so we became known as the
“No Name Street Theatre” !
We performed at all of the “Mediaeval” Barsham Fayres (which preceded the renactment
circuit) and most of the subsequent Albion Fayres
